Emotional Support & Psychiatric Service Animals

At Renee Diane & Associates, we recognize how deeply animals can influence healing, calm, and daily stability. For many individuals, the presence of an animal provides not only comfort but also structure and emotional grounding that can transform mental health recovery.

We provide professional evaluation and documentation services for clients who may benefit from incorporating an animal into their treatment plan — whether through an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) or a Psychiatric Service Animal (PSA). We believe in empowering clients through compassionate care and responsible education about the therapeutic use of animals. If you or your client may benefit from an ESA or PSA, we’re here to guide you through the process with professionalism and heart.

What’s the Difference Between an ESA and a PSA?

Emotional Support Animal (ESA)

  • Offers comfort and companionship that help reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, or trauma.

  • Does not require specialized task training.

  • Is not covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and therefore does not have public access rights.

  • May qualify for housing accommodations under the Fair Housing Act (FHA) when supported by appropriate clinical documentation.

Psychiatric Service Animal (PSA)

  • Is individually trained to perform specific tasks that directly assist with a psychiatric or emotional disability (for example, interrupting panic attacks, grounding during dissociation, or medication reminders).

  • Is covered under the ADA, which grants public access rights.

  • May be trained by the owner or a professional trainer — no federal certification process exists.

Our Role in the Process

Renee Diane & Associates assists with:

  • Clinical assessment to determine if an ESA or PSA is therapeutically appropriate

  • Writing professional support letters for housing, travel, or workplace accommodations

  • Educating clients on ADA and FHA guidelines to ensure ethical and compliant use

All letters are written by a licensed mental health professional and meet the standards required for legitimate accommodation requests.

Important Clarifications

We are committed to integrity, transparency, and ethical practice.
Please note:

  • We cannot “certify” or “register” any animal as an ESA or service animal. Federal law does not recognize such certifications.

  • We do not train or recommend specific animals, as we are not animal trainers or behavioral specialists.

  • We assume no responsibility or liability for the behavior, temperament, or actions of any animal designated as an ESA or service animal.

Our role is to evaluate clinical need and provide appropriate documentation — not to determine an animal’s training or suitability.
